Social Media users, and Music Lovers Crown Stonebwoy winner of Asaase Sound Clash

Published

Ever since the whole Asaase Radio created a battle platform wave kicked off, bringing a much-needed spark of joy and excitement to the dreadful pandemic grind, those of us who love and respect dancehall music and Ghanaian sound system culture have been asking ourselves when (if ever) the world would finally recognize that this whole digital sensation was based on the concept of sound clash.

Considering the fact that, Africa systems culture, Ghana as a matter of fact, pioneered the sort of “beat battles” have made the lyrical clash a social media sensation over two decades ago, the creative decision was absolutely more than fitting. By pitting two icons of the genre, Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale, in head-to-head competition, the maiden edition of “Asaase Sound Clash” did not just showcase two of its most respected lyricists ever to hold a microphone, it also tapped into an epic rivalry that stretches back more than a a decade ago.

When Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale came through Asaase FM days before the performance, they both declared that they would not be preparing for the battle as the art of war should be spontaneous. This has had people on tender hooks as no one really knows what would happen on the night. But of course all celebrities were out in full force for this highly anticipated battle.

On Saturday, September 12, 2020, fans were able to enjoy a “Verzuz-like” battle between reggae and dance-hall greats Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale, who decided to switch things up by trading songs from within the same room. Together, the Ghanaian giants were able to perform their biggest classics in front of hundreds of indoor fans and about thousands social media users, all with their cultural flag behind him mid-performance.

Arguably the most exciting and spontaneous edition of Ghana’s version of the “Verzuz” battle, the Stone and Shatta battle was not a “clash” in the traditional Jamaican or Reggae/Ragga a& Dance-hall sense, but it was hardly a conventional beat battle either. The clash, in true ‘yaad’ fashion ran slightly off-schedule according to the anxious social media butterflies and invited guests who sat listening to the mixing styles of the host, Sean B.

Shatta Wale started his set with tracks like Kill Dem With Prayers, Aye Halfcast, Only One Man, Ayoo, Ice Cream, Star Boy, Stinky Mouth, Shatta City, Gringo, Dancehall King.

The proclaimed King of the Dancehall set example by making a punctual appearance clothed in the apparel portraying the orientation of the culture. Africa’s most revered reggae/ragga & dance-hall icon with international presence and reputation first set of tracks in response to Shatta’s set included Blaze Dem (a new song recorded purposely for the clash), Hero, No Sir, Sapashini, Shell Dem, Wicked (featuring Gappy Ranks), Top Skanka, Pepper Dem, People Dey, Name, Pull Up, Something Wicked others.

The chemistry and more importantly the harmony between Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale made it an entertaining show which will be recorded in the history books. With over 30 songs played and performed out of the dancehall deejays’ catalogues combined, the result of the Maiden Asaase Sound Clash battle is still being weighed in the balance.

However, on the morning after the much anticipated dancehall clash between Stonebwoy and shatta wale, social media users have taken to twitter to declare Stonebwoy the winner of the clash. Stonebwoy is trending both at number one and number 2 on twitter with some social media users mocking shatta wale for leaving the stage just before the freestyle battle session which they claim was a clear indication of throwing in the towel.

Together, the duo mixed their familiar cocktail of Afrobeats, Dancehall, and Reggae influences to craft an uptempo ode to casual flirtation on the night. Their deliveries were backed by the BHIM Band who displayed a sense of professionalism and decisiveness in their line of duty.

As the night wore on, the undiluted energy level at the party’s venue rose to its ‘boiling point’ – with everyone at the party feeling so high, shaking in tandem to the music as well as belting out the songs churned out by the Bhim Nation and 30 BG Presidents.

For the party, each admission ticket – especially the VIP had come packaged with standard drinks – which had been a choice of either Hennessy or Belvedere, Patron Silva, Red Bull, Coke, Moet Imperial Range Of Drinks etc. Additional drinks were available for purchase, and had included beer, water and juices. However the fun did not stop after the countdown though. While some party goers chose to call it a night after the new year had struck, many chose to continue to party on till 6am on 1 January 2017. All the DJs certainly kept the energy high at all times throughout the night – with smooth transitions from trance, electric, house, trap and other genres of music to remixes that left the enthusiastic crowd clamoring for more.

“All Thanks To God And Every Single Person For Making #ActivateParty OVER CHOOOKE. BhimNation x OBO, @stonebwoyb x @davido. we are Grateful! Loading… #ACTIVATECONCERT world Tour..” Stonebwoy tweeted

Organized by Burniton Music Group – BMG and Davido Music World-wide – DMW, the party was borne-out from the chart-topping single that was released few weeks ago. On “Activate,” Davido and Stonebwoy join forces for the first time. The lighthearted nature of the track finds its roots in a spontaneous weekend trip from Nigeria to Ghana on Davido’s end, birthing the two African superstars’ latest concoction.

From the outset, planning was made very simple and on arrival the DJ was amazing. He kept the dance floor full and the atmosphere buzzing right the way through the night. That being said, the “Bhim Fridays” was absolutely fantastic and the event is certainly here to stay. On Friday, November 27, Stonebwoy cultivated a new monthly ‘signature’ event that saw him getting more ‘intimate’ with music consumers, most especially his fan who have been his ‘spine’ in his career.

With an amazing sound system, stage & aerial lighting, state of the art decor that came paired with incorporating the newest technology, ideas, and features, the Accra edition of “BHIM FRIDAYS” premiered at the Enclave Gardens, East Legon. What made the night so special was the plethora of other activities that complemented the music, such as good food, fun and gaming – an activity that saw party-goers winning lot of give-ways from headline sponsors.

This music gathering had a roster of some of the country’s most talented musicians, from up-and-comers to megastars, and the crowd was composed of everyone from hippies to hipsters who reception and reactions were impeccable. Epixode, Fameye, Mr. Drew, Freda Rhymz, Darko Vibes, Larruso, Phronesis, OGee The Mc, among others were highlighted as the guest performers who took turns to deliver overwhelming performances to the teeming music inclinded audience.

Stonebwoy’s performance was acclaimed by other guest of media personalities (Abeiku Santana, Serwaa Amihere, Nana Aba Anamoah, Doreen Avio etc), industry stakeholders, gatekeepers and other critics. His performance reconfirms his skills as a live performer. Performing alongside the Bhim Band, he started his set with a freestyle which later led to an acoustic session of “Only Love” (a single extract off Anloga Junction), and flowed into the delivery of hit higlife single – “Sobolo”.

Stonebwoy went on the perform “Strength & Hope” and “Run Go” which were all delivered in acoustic. He flaunted his supreme vocal and dancing chops throughout the show. The multiple award-winning artiste switched style up when his second set was backed by in-house Disk Jockey, Justice. Stonebwoy delivered jaw-dropping freestyles on riddims dished out by DJ Justice. The music monster made a point, abd his performance was a proof of life.

With epic stages, non-stop music, and wonderful vibes, a trip to East Legon was a psychedelic experience that left an all right memory on the mind of event goers. It will definitely become a global phenomenon.
